ZICTA orders mobile network improvement in Chilanga South

Chilanga South Constituency Member of Parliament Ngenda Situmbeko says the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) has directed three mobile network operators to improve network coverage in the constituency.

Mr Situmbeko says this follows a complaint regarding poor mobile network coverage and connectivity in Chilanga South, which prompted ZICTA to conduct a network assessment of Airtel, MTN and Zamtel in the area in September, 2026.

In a statement made available to the media, he explained that according to the ZICTA assessment report, the poor network service is attributed to challenges affecting specific network sites, including sites that were not operating optimally, as well as areas with weak signal strength.

“The assessment found that none of the three mobile network operators fully met the required service standards leading to poor coverage recorded around Chilanga North University, Makeni Jackson Kingdom Hall, BHL Lusaka and Chilonga,” said Mr Situmbeko.

He pointed out that Zamtel, in particular, experienced challenges with call connectivity with approximately one in every ten call attempts failing.

“Following the assessment, ZICTA has directed all three operators to submit corrective action plans within 14 days,” said Mr Situmbeko.

He added that once the necessary interventions are implemented, ZICTA will conduct a follow-up assessment to verify whether network performance and service quality have improved for residents.

Mr Situmbeko stated that the development follows a courtesy visit to ZICTA on 7th September, 2026, where he engaged the Director General, Collins Mbulo in a meeting focused on addressing network connectivity challenges affecting communities in Chilanga South.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to engaging relevant stakeholders and ensuring that the concerns and developmental needs of the people of Chilanga South Constituency receive the necessary attention and action.
