R28.5 billion saved: SIU recovers cash, prevents losses and sets aside unlawful contracts

SIU reports R28.5bn financial benefit from recoveries and legal action.

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) saved the government R28.5 billion during the 2025/26 financial year through the recovery of cash and assets, prevention of potential financial losses and the setting aside of contracts.

According to the SIU, its interventions resulted in a total financial benefit of R28.536 billion, helping to protect public funds and return resources to the State for service delivery and developmental programmes.

The figure includes R1.9 billion in potential losses that were prevented and R936 million in cash and assets recovered.

More than R25.7 billion in contracts were also set aside through legal proceedings before the Special Tribunal and the High Court of South Africa.

“These legal actions help protect public funds from unlawful spending and, where possible, recover and redirect them toward their intended public purposes,” the SIU said.

The unit said the results demonstrated its continued commitment to combating corruption, maladministration and malpractice while safeguarding State assets.

The SIU said investigations remained at the centre of its work during the financial year, with 5,917 investigations conducted under published proclamations closed during the period.

It also submitted 48 reports to the Presidency detailing the outcomes of investigations.

These investigations included matters involving the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport, Ithala Development Finance Corporation, Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality’s Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Works, Makana Local Municipality and Tembisa Hospital in the Gauteng Department of Health.
