North Coast GBV response team hosts fundraiser amid rising demand

Members of the North Coast Rapid Response Team (RRT) are calling for support.

The DSK Group will host a gala dinner on November 7, to raise funds for the North Coast Rapid Response Team (RRT), which says it is handling about seven serious GBV cases a day.

The RRT said it was grappling with a surge in inter-partner violence and horrific cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and had taken financial strain due to the high volume of cases they respond to.

To lend them support, the DSK Group, a non-profit organisation, is hosting a gala dinner to fund the work of the RRT.

Dr Daniel Chettiar, founder of the DSK Group, and member of the RRT, said they were struggling to cope financially with the GBV crisis, especially since the RRT did not receive any funding to operate.

“We deal with cases that require us to travel long distances, and use resources which are available due to our fundraising initiatives.

“In the last month, we dealt with a woman who was hacked by her partner. She had to have multiple stitches on her hands and stomach.

“We also had to relocate a deaf mother and her two children after the mother was assaulted and the three were kicked out of the house by family members.”

Chettiar said the RRT also dealt with the case of a young woman who was beaten by her boyfriend so badly that she was barely recognisable.

“The young woman had been dating the man for six years. She came home early from work and found him in the house with another female.
