Mwanakampwe calls for investment in rain, underground water harvesting

Central Province Permanent Secretary, Milner Mwanakampwe, has called for investment in rain and underground water harvesting to mitigate the impact of climate change on the livestock sector.

Dr Mwanakampwe says water harvesting should be prioritised to safeguard the future of the livestock sector and contribute to the Grow Zambia Agenda of beef exports.

Provincial Permanent Secretary was speaking when a delegation from the German International Cooperation paid a courtesy call on him in Kabwe.

“We need to harvest rain water to ensure our livestock is safe in the time of drought. We can also use the same water for gardening,” he said.

Dr Mwanakampwe noted that rain water has continued going to waste because of lack of investment in appropriate water harvesting infrastructure.

He therefore stressed the need for cooperating partners to support the government’s efforts in mitigating the effects of climate change.

Dr Mwanakampwe said water harvesting is one of the measures that could be undertaken to mitigate the effects of climate change.

“As provincial administration, we look forward to continuous collaboration with cooperating partners in water harvesting in Central Province. Districts like Mumbwa are prone to drought,” he said.

He also noted that the livestock sector can only be safeguarded from climatic shocks through the harvest of rain and underground water.
