Milk boosts Romase school attendance in Lundazi

School attendance at Lundazi’s Romase Primary School has significantly increased following the government’s initiative of introducing milk to the school feeding programme for the early child learners.

School headteacher, Henry Banda, told the media in an interview that the move has also prompted parents to approach the school administration with the request to have their children enrolled outside the enrollment school calendar.

“Eight parents came to the school to request the school to admit their children in Pre-school so that they can also benefit from the fresh milk sachets that the school is providing to the learners,” Mr Banda said.

He has since commended the Government for the initiative, adding that not every home has all the food requirements.

Mr Banda said the school anticipates high enrolment levels this November for next year’s Early Childhood learners.

“As a school, we would be very happy if enrolment levels will be increased next year as it would be a step in the right direction, reducing illiteracy levels in the District,” he said.

He further urged the government not to relent in providing food to the learners.

And an Early Childhood Education (ECE) teacher, Mwanida Banda, said class attendance has improved after milk sachets were introduced to the ECE learners late last term.

Ms Banda added that pupils no longer report late for school and that absenteeism due to sickness has also reduced.

“Since the introduction of milk to the ECE learners, I have noticed that concentration in class has improved as well as general body health for the children,” Ms Banda noted.
