LPM councillor questions silence over Windhoek Angolan street children

Landless People’s Movement (LPM) City of Windhoek councillor Ivan Skrywer has questioned the lack of government leadership over the growing presence of children begging and selling goods on Windhoek streets.

Skrywer says residents and tourists have complained to the city about children damaging vehicles and harassing motorists, warning that the situation could have deeper implications.

He made these remarks at a LPM press conference on Tuesday.

“Residents have started to complain to us to say their properties are being damaged at the robots,” he said.

He said the city had engaged the police over the issue, with authorities reportedly saying some of the children had entered Namibia hiding in vehicles and other modes of transport.

“These are very minor children. There must be something behind the whole transportation process. There must be something sinister,” Skrywer said.

He questioned how the government planned to deal with the children, particularly if they were removed from the streets under city bylaws.

“The question is where do we take them as a city. Because we don’t have accommodation,” he said.

Skrywer also questioned how immigration, the police, defence and intelligence authorities could allow the situation to continue.

“Where is the leadership? Unless there is a futuristic, very sinister plan . . . in terms of influencing the voter numbers in the future,” he said.
