The power of photography to transcend borders, preserve human stories and encourage understanding between people was at the centre of Dr Iqbal Survé’s address at the opening of the Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest Exhibition in Durban.

Welcoming diplomats, photographers, artists, media representatives and guests to the exhibition, Dr Survé described the arrival of the international photography exhibition in Durban as significant, noting that it was the first time the exhibition had been hosted in the city.

The exhibition features 30 award-winning photographs by photojournalists from different countries and backgrounds. According to Dr Survé, while the photographs document very different circumstances, they share a common thread: the human experience.

“Each photograph is a record of a particular moment, but it is also an invitation to look more closely,” Dr Survé said.

He reflected on the enduring power of an image in an era dominated by an overwhelming flow of information, arguing that a single photograph can sometimes communicate more powerfully than pages of text.

“We read headlines, scroll through reports and hear competing versions of events every day. Yet one powerful image can sometimes communicate what pages of text cannot,” Dr Survé said.

Dr Survé placed particular emphasis on perspective, pointing out that every photograph represents a choice by the person behind the camera, from where they stand to what they choose to capture.

But, he added, the viewer also brings their own perspective to an image.
