The DA's Abdulkader Elyas remains a sitting City of Cape town councillor, despite allegations he lied about his qualifications.
Cape Town Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor Abdulkader Elyas is apparently defying the terms of a disciplinary deal reached in September 2024 in serving as the manager of the party’s Western Cape campaign team ahead of the Local Government Elections, prompting calls from within the party for his membership to be terminated.
This comes after it was alleged that Elyas is on the brink of promotion to Parliament or the Western Cape Legislature.
Elyas was outed for lying about his qualifications, in which he claimed he was a doctor.
DA Western Cape leader Tertius Simmers said: “The DA confirms that a historical matter involving Councillor Abdulkader Elyas was dealt with and concluded through the party’s disciplinary processes. The DA respects the integrity of its disciplinary processes and will not engage publicly on any confidential details of those proceedings”.
Previously, ActionSA Western Cape chairperson and mayoral candidate Dereleen James said she was not surprised that Elyas could be promoted.
“Having presented himself as a medical doctor, going so far as to wear medical scrubs and claim that he started university at the age of 15, an internal DA disciplinary record seen by ActionSA found DA Cllr Elyas guilty of charges relating to the falsification of his qualifications. Despite these findings, he remains a sitting councillor and, according to credible information received, is now being considered for promotion to serve as a lawmaker in South Africa,” James said.

The letterhead states: “Federal Legal Commission of the Democratic Alliance”, and the 13-page document, signed on September 5, 2024, outlines the plea and penalty agreement reached between Elyas and the DA.
Elyas was found guilty on five charges pertaining to lying about qualifications he had not obtained, including BCom Economics with Finance and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.
