President Advocate Duma Boko has officially launched the Botswana Economic Transformation Program (BETP), a bold national initiative aimed at revitalizing the country’s stagnant economy and reducing unemployment.
Speaking during the launch, President Boko acknowledged Botswana’s over-reliance on diamonds and widespread poverty, calling the current economic situation “a national inflection point.” He stressed the need for urgent reforms to diversify the economy and build resilience.
The President outlined a four-point agenda focused on shifting Botswana towards a services-led economy, establishing the country as a regional financial hub, leveraging its political stability to attract investment, and delivering sustainable, inclusive growth.
“Our transformation will not be slow – we will sprint,” said Boko, referencing global success stories like Dubai and Singapore as models.
The program also includes the introduction of economic transformation labs to fast-track investment opportunities and dismantle bureaucratic delays. To drive implementation, Botswana has partnered with Phemandu Associates, a world-renowned transformation firm, already working on the ground.
Progress will be tracked via a Presidential Delivery Dashboard, ensuring transparency and accountability across all ministries.
“This is not a plan for the privileged few. It’s for every citizen, every village, every town,” President Boko said.

Dialogue with Leaders of State-Owned Enterprises
Today I met with leaders of State-Owned Enterprises, vital arms of the government’s commercial machinery to align on national priorities and a renewed focus on delivery.
I announced the launch of a National Transformation Programme, to be completed in 12 weeks. Unlike the National Development Plan, this initiative will focus on actionable projects with clear output goals, developed through broad stakeholder engagement.
A Project Delivery Unit has been established in the Office of the President to ensure timely execution and accountability.
With a results-driven mindset, our SOEs can help drive Botswana’s transformation.

Bonno National Housing Programme
Yesterday in Palapye, the Bonno National Housing Programme was officially launched, a decisive step toward delivering 61,000 quality homes across all 61 constituencies.
This marks a shift from the traditional National Development Plan to a focused, results-driven National Transformation Plan, with a clear emphasis on real, tangible change for Batswana.
Access to housing is not a privilege it is a right. The Bonno Programme restores that right, offering not just shelter, but dignity, hope, and opportunity.

Lesotho-Botswana Water Transfer Project
In Lesotho this morning, we toured Katse Dam and the Makhaleng River, the proposed site for the construction of a dam that will supply Botswana with 150 million m³ of water annually.
The Lesotho-Botswana Water Transfer Project reflects our shared vision for sustainable development, addressing Botswana’s long term water security needs while harnessing Lesotho’s abundant water resources.
This partnership strengthens our historic ties and ensures mutual benefit, demonstrating our collective resolve to pursue strength in oneness and the enduring spirit of African exchange.🇧🇼🇱🇸

Had a great side conversation with President Hakainde Hichilema where we spoke about the importance of deepening the strategic partnership between Botswana and Zambia.
In 2023, Zambia imported $13.4M worth of salt, $10.8M of that from Botswana. This trade dynamic highlights the growing cooperation between our two nations, especially in key sectors like agriculture and food security. It also reflects the broader momentum of intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), as more countries turn to one another to meet their needs and drive sustainable development from within the continent.

Blood Parliament - BBC Africa Eye Documentary
On June 25th 2024, blood was spilt at Kenya’s parliament. That day, thousands of protestors headed there to stop the 2024 finance bill being passed into law. En-route they were met with tear gas, truncheons, and even gunfire. When they got there, and stormed the legislature, some of that gunfire turned lethal. At least three people were killed: students, shopkeepers, and Sunday school teachers. Since then, no one has been held to account for their deaths. Now, using open-source intelligence (OSINT) and forensic techniques, #bbcafricaeye can expose the men who spilled blood on the grounds of Kenya’s parliament.

New Dawn in Selebi Phikwe
Yesterday, we had a meaningful engagement with the residents of Selebi Phikwe. A topic that continues to weigh heavily is the closure of the BCL Mine. Undoubtedly one of the most unfortunate events in our recent history.
As we chart the way forward, the launch of the Commission of Inquiry represents a critical step towards truth, justice, and accountability.
Equally important were the rich ideas you shared on economic diversification. Where feasible, these ideas will be supported to come alive and drive sustainable development. The outstanding academic performance of Phikwe schools serves as a powerful reminder that giving up is not an option.
Though broken, we shall rise. We will rebuild. In three years, transformation must be visible. Together, we must make it happen.
