A Verulam temple was broken into twice on Friday, with thieves stealing window frames and light fittings worth up to R15,000.

The organisation is appealing for funds to improve security.

Thieves broke into the Redcliffe Temple on Friday at around 11am and stole five aluminium window frames and external six light fittings.

The temple’s vice chairman Mukesh Inerjith said the thieves attempted to rob the temple a second time on the same day but were disturbed.

“A robber was seen on the temple property a second time later the same evening but was disturbed. A neighbour from the next door property had witness somebody trying to break-in. The man ran away when the neighbour shouted out,” said Inderjith.

He said the temple has been a soft target for the criminal elements in recent months.

Inerjith said in August the temple was broken into and criminals made off with a gas stove and a big pot used for cooking.

He said the latest robbery had cost the temple between R10 000 to R15000.

“We have no one living on-site presently or security therefore we have become a soft target. The temple perimeter is partially fenced. As an organisation we are angered and concerned by this incident. We are liaising with the relevant authorities to try and prevent further losses,” said Inerjit.

Inerjit said they identified a suspect and had handed the information to the police for investigation.
