Police in KwaZulu-Natal have warned of WhatsApp messages offering police jobs in exchange for upfront payments.
Police in KwaZulu-Natal have been alerted to WhatsApp messages offering employment in the South African Police Service (SAPS) in exchange for a payment of R15,000.
This was a scam, said the SAPS on Tuesday. The WhatsApp profile picture used in the bogus job offers is that of the KZN Deputy Commissioner for Corporate Services, Major-General SB Ngcobo.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Paul Magwaza said the scammers' modus operandi involves sending WhatsApp messages to unsuspecting people, promising employment in the police service.
“They will immediately forward an application form to the prospective victim. The scammers demand R15,000 for the purported employment opportunity. Victims are, however, instructed to pay a deposit of R7,500 with the balance payable upon signing employment papers,” he said.
The public is warned to look out for such WhatsApp messages and report them at the nearest police station. Magwaza said employment in the SAPS is not for sale. Nobody should be asked to pay for employment in the police service; anyone doing so is committing a crime.
