Botswana’s Vision for Radical Change Under President Duma Boko

President Duma Boko Promises Rapid Transformation for Botswana, Undeterred by Criticism

In a bold and unwavering statement, President Duma Boko of Botswana declared his commitment to a transformative vision for the country that he insists will occur “big time, seriously, massively, and quickly.” Despite facing some pushback from critics, Boko has reiterated his determination to push Botswana toward rapid change, emphasizing that the nation’s future will not be held back by outdated practices or slow-moving bureaucratic systems.

Boko’s comments, made during a recent address, outlined his strategy for rapid reform, focusing on breaking free from entrenched modes that have historically stifled the country’s potential. He emphasized that the old ways of doing things will no longer hold Botswana back as it enters a new era of growth and development.

“We are going to change it. It’s going to change. Big time. Seriously. Massively. Quickly,” Boko proclaimed, stressing the urgency of the transformation. He acknowledged that such change might be met with resistance, especially from those accustomed to the status quo. “Some of the time, we are going to swim against the tide. We are going to break free.”

The President’s strong words come amid a wave of criticism that has labeled his approach as “dictatorial.” However, Boko was quick to reject such characterizations, clarifying that his actions are not about authoritarianism but about doing what is necessary to effect change in the shortest possible time frame. "I don’t need 58 years,” he said, referencing Botswana’s long history of gradual development. “Even if you gave me 58 years, I’ll still do what I’m doing.”

Boko is clearly focused on efficiency and results. He made it clear that change would require a shift in both mindset and the people driving the process. “We have to ask, are the people that are supposed to drive this rapid change properly suited? Are they the right people? Are they agile? Can they work through the night?”

He recounted a personal anecdote to highlight what he views as an outdated work ethic within the civil service. A colleague had called a government worker at 11 p.m., only to be told that the civil servant was “in bed.” The worker arrived at the office in pajamas to show they were on the job, but for President Boko, the message was clear: “We don’t care how you are dressed. We care that the work gets done.”

Boko’s message to the country is one of urgency and transformation. Under his leadership, Botswana is setting its sights on a future of greater efficiency, accountability, and a quicker pace of progress. For those who may resist these changes, he is clear: this is the direction the country must move in, and it will not be slowed by outdated systems or old habits.

As President Boko continues to lay the groundwork for this ambitious transformation, it remains to be seen how his reforms will shape Botswana’s future and whether the country’s institutions will be able to keep up with the rapid pace of change that he envisions. But one thing is certain: Botswana is entering a new chapter, and President Duma Boko is determined to lead the charge.
