KwaDukuza Municipality has introduced two high-powered jet skis to its marine safety fleet as part of preparations for the 2026/27 summer holiday season.
Mayor Siduduzo Gumede officially activated the equipment at Salt Rock Beach on Thursday, October 22, alongside partners in the marine safety sector, including the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs’ Provincial Disaster Management Centre and SAPS Search and Rescue teams.
The activation also included the hoisting of the Blue Flag at Salt Rock Beach after the site received the accreditation from the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) for the 2026/27 season.
The municipality expects thousands of visitors to flock to its five Blue Flag beaches and other tourism attractions during the summer holidays.
Gumede said the acquisition of the jet skis demonstrated the municipality’s commitment to improving public safety through partnerships.
“I am very proud today! This is a demonstration of how KwaDukuza will look like in the future. We want a municipality that will form partnerships for the good of our communities. This partnership tells a good story, and I wish all departments can emulate this practice, it’s a good practice,” he said.
Speaking at a ceremonial guard of honour at Salt Rock Beach, Gumede said the new equipment would help attract more visitors by demonstrating that their safety was a priority.
“The equipment that we have acquired will help us attract even more people to our area as they realise that we are putting their safety first.
“Looking at what has happened in the past, including the calamities of disasters, it becomes important that we work with other partners to ensure that we build safe, clean, healthy and resilient communities,” he said.
The activation comes as the municipality prepares for increased coastal activity during the summer holiday period, with marine safety partnerships expected to play a key role in protecting beachgoers.
