17 years behind bars: The fall of corrupt ex-police officers

Former detective Sergeant Bonginkosi Dlamini, who accepted a bribe to weaken evidence in a 2018 murder case and interfered with State witnesses, was sentenced to 17 years in jail.

The Pinetown Regional Court recently sentenced two former senior police officers, Lieutenant Colonel Khephu Ndlovu and Sergeant Bonginkosi Dlamini, to 17 years' imprisonment each for corruption and defeating the administration of justice.

The charges stemmed from their interference with State witnesses in a 2018 murder case.

Between August and October 2019, the officers accepted a bribe to weaken evidence in the murder case of Thulani Nxumalo, an ANC branch leader assassinated in KwaNdengezi. The goal was to ensure the acquittal of the killer and mastermind.

Dlamini, a detective and the investigating officer in the Nxumalo murder case, had led the team that initially arrested the suspects. Ndlovu, who worked in the Visible Policing Unit at the Bhekithemba police station and also served as a police spokesperson, acted as the coordinator of the scheme.

The bribe money, R120,000, was withdrawn by Sibongile Ndlovu to shield her husband, Felokwakhe ‘induna’ Ndlovu, from being jailed for Nxumalo’s murder. The exchange took place at the Durban Central police station.

The scheme unravelled after the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) arrested Dlamini. Subsequent arrests included Sibongile, her husband Felokwakhe, Lt. Colonel Ndlovu, Felokwakhe's brother, and the couple’s son, Lindokuhle Mbonambi, who had hidden the murder weapon.

Former Lieutenant Colonel Khephu Ndlovu was sentenced to 17 years' imprisonment for defeating the administration of justice.

Felokwakhe, an induna from KwaNdengezi, was sentenced to life imprisonment in May 2023 by the Durban High Court, along with two others, for killing Nxumalo. The motive for the murder was Nxumalo’s opposition to Felokwakhe selling the Ingonyama Trust land designated for community development for his personal gain.

Magistrate Muntukayise Khumalo remarked on Dlamini's potential: “Dlamini was an intelligent young police officer who could have made his name within the police hierarchy in the way he was doing his job.”
